Playing in the National championships at Royal Leamington Spa, representing Kent, the Herne Bay fours team of Alfie Lewis, Grant Allen, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly unfortunately lost their first round game 11-13 against Dorset. In a very close game the Bay quartet led early on and held 5 shots on the 5th end, only for the Dorset skip to kill the end with his last wood. Trailing 9-11 starting the 15th end Bay held 4 shots but with his last wood the Dorset skip took a lucky deflection off an outside wood that then rolled in for shot. Luck was truly against the Kent four and they were unable to close the gap on the final 3 ends.
Bay retained their Forest of Blean league title with a 35 shot win over Birchington. The seven and a half points gained gave Bay the title by 5 points.

Aylesham Magpies vs Spitfires 6/1/26 Having not played since the beginning of December, the Spitfires were eager to restart their matches in the short mat league, playing away to Aylesham on Tuesday. Aylesham play mat on mat; this makes the mats slower which can make it more challenging for us as we play on very fast mats.  Spitfires took 2 points from the match with Jane Chubb, Derek Hewett and Colin Tobutt winning 14 – 11. Unfortunately, Maureen Tobutt, Marianne & John Offer struggled with the pace, losing 17-6. Hopefully they will pick up points on the return match next Thursday.  Spitfires are standing 4th place in Division 2 with 25 points.

15/12 Hurricanes vs Broadstairs Buzzards (Home) Hurricanes played host to the Buzzards on Monday evening. Having won the away match 0-6 last week, Hurricanes felt secure in having a strong position for the home leg.   On the blue mat Jacqui Cooper, Dave McNeely and Brian Gisby got off to a very strong start only dropping 1 point in the first 11 ends. They went on to win 20-4. On the red mat however it was a close-run game. Dave Knight, Angie Gisby and Russell Cooper made a strong start, but the Buzzards pulled back in the mid-section of the game to overtake the Hurricanes, leading  6-10 with 3 ends to go. Fortunately, the Hurricanes listened to their skip who urged them for 3 strong ends to finish. They picked up 2 points on each to take the game. Final score 12-10 to Hurricanes. This was an important win, Hurricanes keep the top spot, against the Capel Kiwis who lost their game to the Swalecliffe Oysters during the week. This keeps the pressure on the Kiwis who now only have one game in hand with the Hurricanes just 1 point ahead. All to pay for in the second half of the season.

Division 1- Hurricanes vs Broadstairs Buzzards 9/12/25 (Away) Hurricanes faced Broadstairs Buzzards away this week on Tuesday. On arrival at Broadstairs, you are faced with two mats laid on board and pushed right to the end of the clubhouse, there is nowhere to stand other than at the sides of the mats. This can be a bit off-putting as you can see people to the side of you as you bowl. Despite this Hurricanes secured a decisive victory (33-10) which solidified their top position in the League. Match points 0-6 to Hurricanes which maintains their lead on 37 points, closely followed by Capel Kiwis on 30 points with games in hand.

Unfortunately, the Bears had the greater shot difference winning 22-15. Spitfires second team struggled with the Barham mats and went down 15-10. No excuses but Spitfires reported that the floor at Barham had been re-laid and there was a physical drop between the original part of the hall and the extension which meant going up or down a lump in the middle of the mats. This must have made playing there very challenging. Match points 6-0 to the Bears. Despite their loss Spitfires maintained their fourth position in Division 2.

After all the euphoria of last week suddenly we come down to earth with a tremendous thump. It appears as if a massive black cloud descended on Spenser Road last night and threw all its contents on the bowls green. Although both of our sides suffered overall defeat there were some sterling performances that are worthy of mention. Our home 'A' side of Terry Kelly, Bob Baldwin, Eddie Allen and Joe Kelly scored a good victory over Ashford Rail by 28 shots to 18. Unfortunately, our away side could not reduce their deficit and took a painfully beating. The pride of place must however go to Bob Day's men in a magnificent win over a very, very strong Canterbury side. My hat goes off to: - Dave Nash, Alf Collar, Tom Attaway and of course the evergreen Bob Day. 27 - 20 they won to a side that have aspirations of winning the Cox Cup outright. Well done lads a credit to "The Bay". As with the 'A' side the 'B' away leg could not reduce their deficit.

There was dancing and merriment in the streets around Spencer Road last night and lights in houses were shining well into the early hours as supporters celebrated a great night for "The Bay". Unfortunately, I was at Folkestone so my report is reasonably limited to the action that I witnessed. So, starting with The Bay 'A' v Folkestone Park. Our away side of Alfie Lewis, Les Mason, Scott Whiting and Grant Allen struggled all evening against a Folkestone side who were obviously very familiar with a tricky green. Credit must be given when 8 - 19 down after 15 ends they fought back and won the remaining 6 ends 8 - 3. that produced a final score of 16 - 22 to Folkestone Park who played their green well and deserved the home win. But "The Bay" had a home side of Terry Kelly, Bob Baldwin, Eddie Allen & Joe Kelly, and what a magnificent performance they provided to win 36 - 15.

Whilst we had two teams at home in the Cox Cup last night it also meant we had two away. For my sins I paid the short trip to Whitstable with The 'A' team whilst The 'B' side made the long journey to Wear Bay which for those unaware is in the Folkestone area.  My main ramblings are therefore confined to the action at Whitstable. The green? As agreed by both sides (Alfie Lewis, Les Mason, Ian Robb & Grant Allen representing The Bay) can best be described as challenging. A grand total of 58 shots between the two sides probably tells a story. There was great excitement on the 13th end when Grant fired and caught the jack perfectly, only to see it bounce off a back wood and charge about 8 yards forward - 5 down. From 16 - 15 up The Bay were 16 - 20 down. That seemed to vitalise the team and led by Alfie took a 4 followed by another 4,2,3,2, and a 1 before completing the game with a 35 - 23 win. At home the rink of Terry Kelly, Bob Baldwin (naughty boy playing on rink 6 earlier in the day - take a reprimand), Eddie Allen and Joe Kelly in difficult circumstances lost 15 - 17.

Round 1 of the Cox Cup saw 2 Herne Bay sides draw together. The selection committee and myself decided that as a Club, there being no game on last Saturday afternoon that we would use this date to fulfil the Cox Cup fixture.  We also decided that as far as we could we would pick two sides of equal standing.  Due to unavailability Dave Nash stepped in at the last minute to replace (in the end with good result) Dave Harris. It was a game played throughout with good humour and sportsmanship with pieces of skill thrown in for good measure. The rinks of Russell Cooper, Ray Chipperfield, Paul Evans and Jim Watson gained victory over Dave Knight, Bill Gibbon, Stuart Emert and Brian Gisby whilst Mike Trotter, Tony Knibbs, Dave Nash and Bob Day triumphed over Richie Callanan, John Offer, Tony Rowson and John Toms. My thanks go to the many supporters who attended the game on a nice hot sunny afternoon who were well entertained by the standard of bowls provided. Also, thanks to Dave Harris who although not fit enough to play did a Stirling job behind the bar and also Colin Hadlow for attending as the no playing reserve. Thank you Colin & Dave.

A lovely June morning saw our 2 rinks at Kearsney Bowls Club for the second round of the EBA Top Club. The game itself was probably more for the purest than the enthusiastic follower. A very experienced Herne Bay side eased themselves into the next round against a very keen opposition. Without being disrespectful it was a little like the excitable puppy who would keep biting your ankles and not going away. "The Bay" would take a respectable lead and then Kearsney would chip away but not quite get near enough to cause an upset. "The Bay" finally ended up winning 49 shots to 31 in reply. Terry Kelly, Eddie Allen, David Holmes & Joe Kelly winning 28 - 17 and Alfie Lewis, Scott Whiting, Dave Mason and Grant Allen winning 21 - 14.  After the game we were presented with a superb chicken pie & veg and our thanks go to the staff who provided the meal.

Fingernails were bitten to the quick in this thrilling EBA Top Club when "The Bay" visited Lenham. We opened with high hopes of a good win in all our disciplines, but this was soon smashed as Dave Mason came in what can be described "as a cropper" in the 2 wood. The next to finish was Grant Allen in the Singles. Grant lead most of the time until on the 20th end, leading 19 - 15 he dropped a 2. The following end with one bowl to play he was 4 down (game to his opponent). With not a particularly easy shot to play Grant managed to get 4th bowl and thus became 20 - 19 down. 2 shots on the 22nd end enabled him to win 21 - 20. Lenham 1 the Bay 1 overall. Our pair of Les Mason & David Holmes never looked like losing from end 1. Indeed, it was 10 ends before Lenham troubled the score board. Lenham 1 The Bay 2 overall. Our 4's of Alfie Lewis, Bob Baldwin, Tom Attaway & Gordon Kent were the next to finish. Having led for most of the game 5 shots on the last 2 ends enabled the Lenham Rink to claim victory. Lenham 2 The Bay 2 overall. All down to our triple of Terry Kelly, Scott Whiting & Eddie Allen.  Everything had looked rosy in the garden at 12 ends with The Bay holding a 16 - 8 lead. Unfortunately, Lenham then scored 6 shots in the next 5 ends to The Bay's 1.  17 - 14 to The Bay with one end to decide the match. It was at this time that I must thank David Holmes for his total and utter faith in a Bay win. With all of the players from the other completed  matches watching plus supporters who had witnessed the morning play together with players arriving for the next fixture, totalling about 30 personnel, David announced to all and sundry "There is no doubt whatsoever Herne Bay will win".  Lenham scored 2 shots, Herne Bay won the Triples 17 - 16 and consequently the match 3 - 2.

Prior to the start of this game Herne Bay 'B' would have had to play at their very best and Canterbury would needed to have an "off day"  for to progress further in this 1st Round of the EBA Double 4's at Spenser Road last night. Unfortunately, it was not a blue moon in the sky and a very experienced Canterbury side thoroughly deserved to progress into the next round.  A special mention should go to Gordon Kent who ensured his rink of Steve Brown, Paul Evans and Bob Day kept in close touch throughout the game, indeed at 10-ends they were leading 14-10. Alas 2 x 3's and a 2 towards the end allowed Canterbury the luxury of not having to play the last end.  The other rink of Mike Trotter, Brian Gisby and Jim Watson had young Tom Attaway making his first senior and very impressive appearance for The Bay, there is a definite talent there.

Team Manager's Trumpet

Wednesday 11th July 2018 2:08 pm
Match Reports, Men's

Success for "The Bay" means further matches in our calendar.

On Sunday 15th July at 10am we have two rinks at Sandwich in the County Semi-Final of the English Bowling Association Double Fours. Once again some of the best bowlers in Kent will be on view. All support for the lads would be gratefully received.

On Monday 16th July at 6pm in the Cox Cup we have three teams in the 2nd Round. Whilst the three home rinks do battle at Spenser Road their opposite halves will be doing battle at Lyminge, Ashford Rail and Lenham. For those unfamiliar with the rules of the Cox Cup. One rink plays at home and the other plays away and the combined score determines the winner. Herne Bay have entered three teams in this competition and as far as we can remember this is the first time "The Bay" have three teams in the 2nd Round. Any support at any of the venues would be gratefully received.

Smiles All Round

Tuesday 10th July 2018 11:24 am
Match Reports, Men's

There were smiles all round in the bar area of Spenser Road last night as our two remaining sides in the Cox up experienced excellent victories in the 1st Round. They join our other successful side who demolished Folkstone Park on “Super Saturday” morning. Old cobwebs were blown away as one old timer was heard to remark "Never 'appened in my lifetime son, three through to the 2nd round of the Cox? 'Un'eared of". The rink of Mike Trotter, Len Brown, Bob Baldwin and Brian Dennis had a great victory at Hythe winning 26 - 14 whilst their home pairing with David Knight, Steve Brown, Brian Gisby and Jim Watson (who took a six on the final end) won 22 - 18. Making a total victory of 48 - 32. Our final double rink eased to a 55 - 23 victory over Whitstable with Les Mason, David Mason, Paul Woolford and Grant Allen thrashing their opponents 35 - 11 whilst the home rink of Alfie Lewis, Eddie Allen, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly easing to a 20 - 12 win. The team and I would like to thank Sandra, Mo and Angie for the food and drink supplied last night and the numerous supporters including Alf and Joyce who joined me at Whitstable - your support ladies and gents is really appreciated.  One interesting fact emerged was that whilst Herne Bay entered 3 teams with reserves, two sides (Hythe and Folkestone Park) entered only 1 (their best?). At the time of writing our next opponents are not known.

Super Saturday

Saturday 7th July 2018 11:41 am
Match Reports, Men's

If you read our Presidents article on Fabulous Friday, we managed to have a Super Saturday to follow. Herne Bay entered three teams in this year’s Cox Cup and at the request of Folkestone Park one of our rinks was requested to play on Saturday morning instead of the usual Monday evening.  What followed can only be described as a total destruction. I was fortunate enough to witness Bill Gibbon, Tony Knibbs, Gordon Kent and Bob Day complete 30 shots to 10 win at Spenser Road.  Communication with the away rink was not at its best but late in the game the message came through that the rink of Ritchie Callanan, Roy Chillingworth, Paul Evans and Alf Collar were winning by a similar score to our lads at home. They eventually won by 27 shots to 10. Considering Folkstone Park only entered one side I think that this reflects the all-round strength of "The Bay". Very well done to both the home and away sides you did "The Bay" proud. The next round will see the same 8 selected (Ray Chipperfield replacing the unavailable Tony Knibbs) play either Canterbury 'A' or Ashford Rail 'B' on Monday 16th July at 6pm.

On Friday of this week Len Brown, Mike Trotter, Bob Baldwin and Brian Dennis will play the Divisional Final of the over 55 fours against a 4 from Victoria Park. This will be held at Herne Bay starting at 10.30. For this match it has been agreed that the main green will play away from the pavilion and then be turned on completion of the match. Any support for the men would be appreciated.

On Friday evening at Aylesham & Snowdown we have two 4's through to the Divisional Final. Alfie Lewis, Shaun Woolford, Ian Robb and Paul Woolford will play a 4 from Sandwich and Dave Mason, Scott Whiting, Grant Allen and Joe Kelly will play a 4 from Canterbury.

Finally our Ladies commence their Mollie Cleggett campaign next Tuesday against Ashford Town with the home rink starting at 2.00.

These are exciting times for the club, show your support when you can. It is much appreciated.

The Bay eased themselves into Round 5 of the English Bowling Association Double 4's at Spenser Road this morning. After 5 ends we lead Ramsgate by a combined score of 17 shots to 2. From that point onwards, the result never appeared in doubt. Ramsgate eventually conceding defeat after both rinks had played 14 ends. The rink of Terry Kelly, Shaun Woolford, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly winning 20 - 7 and the rink of Dave Mason, Scott Whiting, Eddie Allen and Grant Allen winning 26 - 6. A special thank you from the team and myself go to Lyn & John Phillips for giving up their Saturday morning and ensuring we were well fed and watered. Plus, John turning the green twice just for our pleasure.

Last Wood Triumph

Herne Bay men are through to the 4th round of the National Double 4’s competition with a 1 shot victory over Canterbury. The overall lead changed several times during the course of the match and bowling the final wood of the match Bay skip Grant Allen was a shot down which would have given Canterbury victory. It is always easier to sound out the bugle when I have a win to report. Today was such a day when in the English Bowling Association 2nd round of the Double Rinks we defeated a Canterbury side by 53 shots to 29. It looked as if it was going to be a very close contest after 9 ends with Canterbury leading overall by 2 shots. Obviously superior fitness then took over as The Bay took a further total of 39 shots in the remaining ends to Canterbury's 12. Team scores - Terry Kelly, Scott Whiting, Eddie Allen and Grant Allen won 30 shots to 11 whilst the rink of Shaun Woolford, Bill Robb, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly won 23 shots to 19. Canterbury conceding defeat after 18 and 20 ends. The team and myself thank Mo and Angie for the ploughman’s it was really appreciated.

Herne Bays interest in the Top Club ended on Thursday evening when our remaining side deservedly went out to a better Sandwich side. Whilst the 2 - 3 reverse may have appeared close, in all fairness I felt that Sandwich always held the upper hand. Our two single players suffered reasonably heavy defeats and our fours were always playing catch up. Unfortunately, excellent wins in the Pairs (Scott Whiting and Paul Woolford) 18 - 12 and the triples (Terry Kelly, Bill Robb and Joe Kelly) 23 - 11 were not enough to see us through. A mention must be given to Alfie Lewis who came into the rinks at the last minute and gave a most impressive debut at this level. Well done Alfie maybe the singles next year?

The Preliminary Round of the English National Double Fours Competition drew Herne Bay 'A' at home to a very strong Sandwich side. The game took place last night at Spencer Road on a bright sunny evening after a delayed start. Whilst the rink of Richie Callanan, David Knight, Alf Collar and Brian Dennis kept their four in close contention all the way through (they were leading 8 - 4 after 9 ends) it was a match that our visitors eventually won by a total of 15 shots.  Brian's rink eventually ending a very creditable 11 - 14. The rink of Bob Baldwin, Mike Trotter, Bob Day and Brian Gisby needed that little bit of luck that teams need at a vital time and it just didn't happen. An example of this was on the 16th end with the home side holding a 6, Sean McCaughan played a shot that one would expect from a Middleton Cup Skip to cut the deficit to 1.  An excellent shot. I thought both of our sides put up a very creditable performance against a strong opposition who in fairness turned out worthy winners. I would like to thank all the supporters who turned up to see a fine game played in the right spirit. My thanks and that of the team go to Joyce, Mo and Angie for the meal plus Sue and Paul behind the bar.

On the March

Monday 7th August 2017 9:22 am
Match Reports

"The Bay" are on the march. For the second year in succession we have reached the final 4 of the Cox Cup. An excellent display at this morning at Ashford Rail saw us triumph over a very good St Lawrence side. By a coincidence it was the same opponents that we met at the same stage last year, the only difference being that this year the game was completed in daylight. The early ends were keenly fought by both sides with "The Bay" just edging the points scored. Suddenly out of the blue St Lawrence took a 5 on both of our rinks. This gave them a overall lead of 6 shots. With due credit to our two sides they went up to the next gear and slowly fought back. This was a game that apart from the 2 x 5's  no big scores looked possible, and in fact that is how the game continued with ones and two being scored by either side. Fortunately it was "The Bay" getting the two's and St Lawrence the one's. With the rink of Dave Mason, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly drawing 14 all on the 19th end we found at the same time the rink of Terry Kelly, Shaun Woolford,  Paul Woolford and Grant Allen having played only 15 ends, also level at 15 all. What appeared  to be heading for a thrilling finish in the end turned out for a stroll as "The Bay" went up into a further gear and did not drop another shot. Joe's rink ending winning 17 - 14 and Grant's 20 - 15.

The Bay are once again through to the Divisional Final of the Cox Cup. A breakdown in communications in messages from the home-front to  New Romney meant that messages had to be received by telephone and not text which restricts me in giving a fuller home report. It appeared that both of our sides struggled against a New Romney side buoyant in their previous Cox Cup victory over a very strong Canterbury side. Away from home our regular side of Terry Kelly, Shaun Woolford, Paul Woolford and Grant Allen found  the initial ends  hard word work on a lush and very heavy green. It always seemed that at some stage they would take control of the game and from 8 - 11 down on the 13th end they never looked in danger. Ends 14 - 20  resulted in them acquiring 12 slots with no reply from their opponents. New Romney scored 1 shot on the final end to bring in a closing score of 20 -12 to "The Bay". At Spencer Road Dave Mason, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly won by the comfortable margin of 21 shots to 14.

The "Bay" are on the quick march again. Last nights 3rd round tussle against Folkestone Park saw us advance to the 4th round. Taking my seat at the end of rink 3, I witnessed what one can only describe as a weird phenomenon. After 5 ends the rink of Terry Kelly, Shaun Woolford, Paul Woolford and Grant Allen were involved in a very tight struggle with the score at 3 - 3. The news filtered through from Spencer Road that the home rink of Dave Mason, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and super sub Eddie Allen were leading 8 - 2 also after 5 ends. At 10 ends with our away side holding a narrow lead of 8 - 6 the devastating news from Spencer Road crept in "The Bay were leading 22 - 5". Suddenly it was if a bolt of lightening had hit the coastal port. Gone was the skillful arts of Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney and Denis Law style bowls to be replaced by the cast of "Last of the Summer Wine". The match was over as a spectacle as Clegg, Compo and Foggy took to the field. Please dear reader do not take this as a criticism of the play I was watching, it was the only way I can describe the change of atmosphere in one end of what was a close game of bowls. On the conclusion of the 15th end the Folkestone skip decided he was unfit to continue playing due to illness so the game conclude with "The Bay" leading 12 - 8. The home side romped home by 30 - 7. We retired to the bar were we were very well fed on burgers and chips. The talk around the table was not on the saving shot that saved a 6 or 7, nor the "drawing" shot that trails the jack 8 yards, but the 1st episode of Game of Thrones, the first female Dr. Who and risque programs on channel 4. An unusual end to a "different" game of bowls.

When a club is strong enough to enter 3 separate sides in the Cox Cup it is inevitable that at some stage two of those sides will meet. It so happened this year as early as the 1st round. Last night Herne Bay 'B' met Herne Bay 'C'.  I will allow others to ponder on how the make up the sides were selected. Suffice to say that Bob Simcock's rink was selected as a whole on their efforts in the County Fours. When two sides do meet we are guaranteed that one will succeed whilst the other will be eliminated. My congratulations on a splendid win by 49 shots to 32 go to Dave Nash, Len Brown, Alf Collar and Brian Gisby (20 - 15)  and Richie Callanan, Roy Chillingworth, Dave Knight and Bob Simcock ( 29 - 17). In the 2nd Round of the EBA Double Rink Herne Bay made the short visit to St Lawrence. It was a game that swung first one way and then the other. For the first 6 ends the "Bay" were ahead. Then St Lawrence pulled back to level the scores. First one side went ahead followed by the other side pulling level.  At 16 ends each the "Bay" were ahead overall by 27 shots to 21.  This was the point when St Lawrence pulled out the stops and in the remaining 8 ends scored 17 shots to the "Bays" 3. An overall score of 30 shots against 37 to our opponents allow them to continue in the competition.  Our winning rink of Les Mason, Bob Baldwin, Gary Allen and Jim Watson certainly played exceptionally well against a strong experienced St Lawrence side. Steve Brown, Peter Gibson, Bill Robb and Brian Dennis managed to keep the score close until they seemed to "run out of puff" in the final few ends. The Triple of Terry Kelly, Ian Robb and Grant Allen always had control of the game partly due to Terry's selection of green selection not always appreciated by some. They ended up with a 25 - 13 win.The Fours of Bob Baldwin, Gary Allen (welcome back again Gary), Shaun Woolford and Eddie Allen kept a steady lead throughout winning by 22 - 17 in the End.  Well done lads, a good mornings work.

Kearsney away awaits us in the next round.

It was well overdue but tonight "The Bay" recorded their first team win of the season in the EBA Comps. Both rinks in the Double Fours achieved fine wins allowing us  to continue into the next round where we travel to St Lawrence. The rink of Steve Brown, Peter Gibson, Bill Robb and Brian Dennis won 27 - 11. But pride of place must go to the rink of Les Mason (welcome back Les), Stuart Emert, Gary Allen (also welcome back Gary) and skipped by that well known Millwall supporter Jim Watson. In their winning score of 36-12 they achieved the rare distinction of gaining two maximum shots (8) on two consecutive ends (the 16th & 17th).  Well done to all players a fine deserved win. The team & myself would like to than all the supporters and to Joyce and Mo for an excellent meal after the game and to John Toms a first class "washeruperer".

The doom arrived early over Spenser Road as "The Bay" A side crashed out at home to Gateway Friday night. The rink of Terry Kelly, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly dominated their game, never behind and ending up winning 17 - 9. well done lads.  The rink of Dave Mason, Sean Woolford, Eddie Allen and Grant Allen were always struggling against a Gateway rink, that in fairness, played exceptionally well. Always behind but gaining a 7 on the 14th end bringing the deficit to 10 - 16 was only a false dawn . They kept it close to play the final end needing 1 shot to play the extra end. Unfortunately for "The Bay" Gateway took the end and subsequently the game.
Despite what can only be classed as a disastrous opening start to the season for all our EBA matches the Team Manager has been given a vote of confidence from "The Bay" management.

What started off  a bright sunny Thursday evening in Sandwich, turned into a cold wet night which matched the Herne Bay 'B' sides hopes of advancement in the Preliminary round of the EBA Top Club. A sign of things to come came in the 17th end of Bob Simcock's 2 wood singles. Holding 2 shots with one wood touching the jack his opponent put up a firm bowl, hit Bob's shot out the head and took 2 shots himself. If Bob had kept the 2 shots the game would have been level at 12 all. But 10 - 14 down with a couple of ends remaining was too much to ask. The triple of Colin Hadlow, Peter Gibson and Brian Dennis led 12 - 3 after 10 ends only to succumb to a 2 shot defeat on the last end at 14 all. With the Pairs and Fours suffering defeats it was left to Stevie Brown to restore some pride to "The Bay" with a fine 19 - 16 win in the Singles.Well played Steve.  We were, after the game, rewarded with a splendid hot buffet and our grateful thanks go to Gordon & his team. On reflection we must accept that overall the best side won and as many school reports say "Must Try Harder".
On behalf of the team and myself we would like to thank Alf, Eunice, Lyn & John for your support

The final blast of the 2016 Bugle comes with the sadness of defeat but the most successful run (as far as I know) achieved by any Herne Bay side ever. This morning having led for most of the game and by 2 shots on the last end, Bromley grabbed a 3 and a place in the Cox Cup Final against Cobham. In what turned out in the end to be a very close game the one difference in the two sides was probably my old mate Gary Brock one of the Bromley skips. Credit must be given to all those who represented "The Bay" in the Cox this season - Dave Mason, Steve Brown, Shaun Woolford, Paul Woolford, Eddie Allen, Bob Baldwin, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb,  Terry (AKA Tom) Kelly and Joe Kelly. Gents, you gave your all and "Bay" players  and supporters salute your efforts. We will come back stronger next year, we have big unfinished business  to complete. The team and myself would like to thank those who made the long trek to my old stamping ground at Hayes to support - John & Lyn, Bill & Linda , Les  (welcome back mate), Rebecca and I believe relatives of Paul & Shaun. Also to all those who over the course of the season  have given up their time to support, cater and assist - a very big Thank You.

For the first time I am at a complete loss as to where I should start on the saga that unfurled last night at Victoria Park in the Cox Cup against St. Lawrence. I did state to Bill Robb that I would be contacting him to ensure I got everything in the correct order. A delayed start saw Dave Mason, Shaun Woodford and Eddie Allen open proceedings on Rink 1 (a County Divisional Final on an outside rink?) and Terry Kelly, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly on rink 3. The first 19 ends saw each side edge slightly ahead in turn although at one stage "The Bay" actually lead by 10 overall. The 20th end saw the tie level and the skies black, it was 9.10pm. Eddies rink lead by 9, Joes trailed by 9. A firm bowl by the St Lawrence skip saw the advantage switch from "The Bay" to the opposition where they held several shots and the jack in the ditch. Joe drew close - enough for a measure. 1 shot and advantage to St Lawrence after an umpires measure. on rink 1 "The Bay" held several - the opposing skip fires-  the jack shoots to the left - The umpire is called. With St Lawrence holding 4 shots a string is called for to determine whether or not the jack is in or out. The umpire cannot see from the end of the rink - he has to follow the string along the edge of the green. Umpires decision - its out "The Bay" breath again. Spectators sit back on their seats as the end begins again. "The Bay" win the end by 1 so an extra end is played by both rinks. Joes rink are down until he draws shot - "The Bay" win the end by 1 shot. Rink 1 is still going, the houses at the end of the green have disappeared in the darkness, it is 9.20pm. Shaun draws shot and the sees the opposition clip his second bowl in for 2 shots to "The Bay". Try as they might St Lawrence cannot get close so we win by 3 shots on the extra end.

After what can best be described as an "eventful" morning Herne Bay sent out 2 sides in the Divisional Semi Final of the Cox Cup. Having attended the away fixture I can only report directly as the game panned out at Canterbury. After 5 ends the away rink of Shaun Woolford, Steve brown, Paul Woolford and Eddie Allen were really struggling against a very strong Canterbury rink. it would not be amiss to report that Paul & Eddie were keeping us in the game. The news from Spencer Road came in that The Bay rink of Terry Kelly, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly were leading 8 - 2. At 9 ends the away rink looked as if a beating was on the cards as they were 9 - 3 down. The news from home was better with The Bay leading 11 - 4. The Bay gained the mat at Canterbury and from that moment they never looked back. With the mat one quarter of the way up the green The Bay never dropped another shot. With news coming in from home that they were leading 18 - 6 after 15 ends and Canterbury finally conceding the tie at 26 - 7. At the time the away rink was 19 - 9 up after 18 ends. A total win of 45 - 16, a magnificent win. Brilliant result and congratulations to all players.

"The Bay Are On The March". Another fierce encounter in the Cox Cup saw us conquer our distant rivals Folkestone, a side who put us out the same competition last year. The green at Folkestone can best be described as "sporting" If it was your night great - if it wasn't - hard luck. The opposition did agree that most of the "fortune" was shared among their 4 and my congratulations to the Bay 4 of Steve Brown, Bob Baldwin, Paul Woolford and Eddie Allen of sticking to the task when "lady luck" did not smile on our lads. At 6 ends we were 1 - 8 down but cheered by the report from the  home rink of Dave Mason, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly leading 15 - 1 at the same stage.  With "Lady Luck" continuing give a glace let alone a smile the news from Spencer Road  23 - 6 up after 15 we knew that to keep it tight awayfrom home  and the result would come. Whilst "Lady Luck" did not change sides she deserted our opponents on the last 2 ends where we took an eventual deserved  total of 6 shots to draw the game 16 all. The home rink won by 27 shots to 15 which places us nicely (if I am correct) in the Divisional Semi Final where we play Canterbury next Monday ( 1 August) 6pm. All supporters who witnessed our game in the Top Club will know what to expect. I promised then a top class exciting game with some of the top bowlers in Kent appearing. We read in the papers when Manchester United/ Chelsea etc  win in unspectacular fashion the old adage comes out "They did not play at their best - but still won". I think this reflects what happened on Monday evening against Canterbury. Whilst I was watching the away fixture our home side suffered a one shot defeat. I heard several explanations but at the end of the day the lads stuck to it and got what must be considered a reasonable result in the circumstances. Our away side of Bob Baldwin, Shaun Woodford, Paul Woodford and Eddie Allen ground out a  25 - 13 win which on the surface appears very comfortable but in reality certainly was not. On a very fast green which initially suited the hosts it took some time for our lads to master the conditions. Trailing for most of the game experience and ability finally came in to acquire the victory.

This was Canterbury's top side who have aspirations of winning the Cox Cup. Well done gents,  you did Herne Bay proud. Our top side annihilated (I can think of no other word )  Ashford Rail 48 - 9. The home rink of Dave Mason, Scott Whiting, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly winning 26- 6 and Bob Baldwin, Shaun Woolford, Paul Woolford and Eddie Allen winning 22- 3. So our EBA Top Club run finally comes to an end at our old friends and rivals Sandwich.  Dave Mason was the first to complete his disciplines in the 2 wood where he was very narrowly defeated by Mark McCaughan. This was a game that could have gone either way and Dave was unlucky insomuch as Mark played some excellent bowls at the right time to just edge the match. Joe Kelly put us back in contention with a fine win in the singles. Joe has been especially impressive in every round of the singles. Finally special mention must go to the rinks who recorded what must be a record breaking win of 29 - 1. Bob Baldwin, Jim Watson, Scott Whiting and Eddie Allen - gents, the club take our hats off to you. Sandwich got the better of us in the pairs and triples so we must wish them well in their quest for further EBA honours. On the previous Bugle I promised close,  keenly fought, class, fast and exciting bowling. Those fortunate enough to take my advice saw exactly that. The Bugle was blowing well into the night as The Bay recorded a magnificent 4 - 1 win over Canterbury.  Anyone who reads the result and did not witness the game will think "an easy stroll on the green". This win was anything but.  David Mason got us off on the right foot with a 14 - 13 win in the 2 wood. He was one shot down on the last end and secured a full house to win the game. The Triple ( Steve Brown, Shaun Woolford and Paul Woolford) were next to finish with a comfortable 19 - 9 win. Then came the excitement. The fours lost by a couple of shots ( 2 - 1 overall to the The Bay). The Singles ( Joe Kelly 19 - 19 after being 7 - 0 down and trailing all game) and the Pairs  Terry Kelly & Ian Robb  ( after leading all game held a one shot advantage on their final end).  Joe secured the 2 shots necessary with Terry & Ian taking that all important last end. It would be wrong to single out one person but I thought all four players in the single disciplines (Dave & Joe from The Bay & Mick Fisher & Alan Cornfoot from Canterbury) deserve special mention. Gentlemen your bowling was outstanding an absolute masterclass. All the lads from Canterbury were exceptionally gracious in defeat especially as the result could so easily have been reversed. So onto the next round - Sandwich away (6th or 10th July  at 6pm). Finally the team & myself would like to thank Joyce, Maureen and Angie for an excellent meal, Andrew for turning up as reserve, Stan for umpiring, Brian & Roy for marking, Bob Day for locking up (another member failed to appear) twice thanks to Terry Kelly, Carol & Eddie for washing up, Alf & Roy again  for standing in on the bar and last but certainly not least the many spectators  who witnessed last nights spectacular.

Unfortunately personal circumstances dictated that I should miss last nights Top Club encounter at home to Hythe. However my "spy in the sky" informs me that a 1-4 defeat could so easily have been reversed. In the two single disciplines both Bob Simcock and Mike Trotter played extremely well and only slipped up on the last few ends. Mike Trotter deserves special mention insomuch as holding 3 or 4 shots his opponent came in for shot and game with his last bowl. A good win 21 - 16 by Dave Knight, Alf Collar , Ray Day and Bob Day in the 4's was our single victory on the night. My thanks go to Robbie for marking both singles, Stan for officiating in the Umpire stakes , Bob Day & Brian Gisby for taking over the official duties, Roy for acting as reserve and bartender, Chippers  for his support on a cold night and last but by no means least Angie for what I am told was an excellent meal.

Saturday 21 May 2016 at 10am, Herne Bay will be entertaining Birchington in the 1st Round of the EBA Double 4's. As you know all local derbies are closely fought affairs and this game promises to be no different. In my opinion this side has every chance of qualifying for Leamington and here you have the chance to be able to say "I was there in the first round when .......................". The rivalry between these to clubs is immense so get along early, get a front seat and watch the action. Has anybody been shown a red card in bowls? Who knows this could be the first.

A disappointing result tonight at Dane Park in the early round of the EBA Douible Fours. Whilst we had one winning rink of Dave Knight, Richie Callanan, Dave Nash and Alf Collar, the margin was not quite enough to make up the deficit. From an spectators view the green appeared exceptionally heavy which the Dane Park lead exploited to to the full. Once bowls were in the head it was not the green to be able to play shots on. However my congratulations go to Alf & his team on a well fought victory. On behalf of the team & myself I would like to thank, Lyn, Mo, Joyce,Paul & my two fellow selectors Bill & Robbie for their attendance & support.

So to my final 'Bugle' of the 2015 season which had to end either in  "Magnificent Glory" or as in this case "Heartbreak Defeat". Last Monday saw our final Cox Cup side lose a very close game by 3 shots to a Canterbury side who now play their other rink in the area final. After 18 ends we were in actual fact ahead overall, but unfortunately the gods were smiling a little to the west of Herne Bay and the rest becomes history. The rinks of Ray Chipperfield, Mike Trotter, Bob Day and Brian Gisby - Peter Nolan, Ray Day, Bob Sincock and Steve Brown did the club proud and having spoken to several of the players and seen the look of despair and concern even a day after says it all.

First the bad news - Team 'A' lost both at home and away to a very strong Canterbury side who have high hopes of  winning the competition outright - and from a personal point of view they have an excellent chance of achieving this. Apologies for a late Bugle but the bugler had a job finding his mouthpiece. A bit of good, bad with a touch of ugly in the Cox Cup results. Excellent and apparently superb efforts resulted in wins for Herne Bay 'A' v Sellindge  and Herne Bay 'B' v Lyminge. The 'B' side of Ray Chipperfield, Mike Trotter, Bob Day and Brian Gisby eased to  a home win of 28 - 14 whilst the away side of  Peter Nolan, Ray Day, Bob Simcock and Stevie Brown did the job away (sorry I haven't seen the card for the result). Herne Bay 'A' achieved a great result with Dave Knight , Stewart Emert, John Melford and Jim Watson winning 22 - 19 at home whilst the away rink of Roy Chillingworth, Mike Ward, Tony Rowson and The ex Bar Manager himself - Mr Alf Collar winning by 15 -12. They were then rewarded by being told "sorry lads no food and no bar". I somehow think a speedy return to "The Bay" with a win in their pockets made up for the lack of good fare. As for the bad with a touch of ugly was the one disappointment of the night. The 'C' side going out of the competition at the first hurdle to Folkestone Town. Our home rink scrapped home by 4 shots although most onlookers agreed that the "lap of the gods " did favour our guests on several occasions and the win should have been by a greater margin. Whilst away on a "sporting" surface our lads kept into the game until the last end with our home side having completed their game and the total scores level. We held shot with 3 bowls remaining. The opposing skip used weight and clipped the jack to the side where it could have gone anywhere. Once again the "lap of the gods" (where have I heard that before) favoured our opponents and the rest becomes history.

I don't think that in all my years bowling I have ever seen a side walk off the green so dejected. It wasn't the fact that they had been defeated but the manner in which the game had been lost. I do not think there was anybody present at Herne Bay tonight who didn't think that "The Bay" deserved something from this game. Fair enough Gateway kept their nerve at the end but I think "The Gods" did not smile on our lads tonight. With good wins in the singles & pairs The Bay needed a win in either the Fours or the Triples. The Fours led by one shot until the 21st end when the opposing skip drew shot with the last wood to tie the game. An extra end was played at the same time as the Triples played their last end with the scores level. The end result is now history and we must turn our attention to the Cox Cup - a competition I think we have a very good chance of having a very good run.

With other wins in the Triples ( Andy Godsell, Brian Dennis & Eddie Allen)  and rinks (Steve Brown, Bob Baldwin, Brian Gisby & Bill Robb) saw us home by 3 - 2. One shot & a measure in the 2 wood & pairs went against "The Bay" on the last ends - so very close to a 5 - 0. Special mention must go to Bill Robbs rink who took an 8 on the final end . A disappointing evening at Sandwich saw our last side in the "EBA Top Four" crash out to a very strong side containing 5 players who thrashed Middlesex 6 - 0 in the Middleton yesterday. A pleasing point was that at no stage did I notice a dropping of heads from the Herne Bay lads. Was there anything to take out of this game? I think there was - a reminder of the consistency necessary to get bowls in the head as admirably displayed by our opponents. A special mention for Peter Nolan who played his first game against "the big boys". He was never overawed by the occasion and gave as good as he got. Well done Peter.
