Team Manager's Bugle
I promised a spectacular at Spencer Road last night in the English Bowling Association Double rink 3rd Round game against Canterbury, and what we got was a classic. Whether or not I would have classed it as such had Grant's last bowl had a different ending remains to be seen. However, those fortunate enough to attend were rewarded with a bowls match between two evenly matched sides that lived up to what one would expect from some of Kent's finest.
On a fine summer evening the game started with both sides taking a turn at holding a slender lead. Even at the halfway stage the overall score was Herne Bay 16 Canterbury 17. After 15 ends Canterbury lead by 2 shots. At 20 ends the rink of Shaun Woodford, Eddie Allen, Ian Robb and Joe Kelly trailed 14 - 17 whist the rink of Terry Kelly, Scott Whiting, Paul Woodford, and Grant Allen lead 23 - 17. Joe the dropped an unfortunate 3 - the total scores were all level 37 - 37 with Grant's rink to play to decide who wins the match. A long jack is pushed back about 1 yard from the ditch - advantage Canterbury. The final 4 Canterbury bowls finish short of the head. 3 "Bay" bowls end up in the ditch. "Cometh the man, Cometh the hour", final bowl of the night "Sir" Grant Allen sends the crowd into raptures as he draws shot. Herne Bay win 38 - 37.
On reflection it was a game played in the true spirit of the game of bowls. No quarter asked, none given. When a delicate question of "bowls rules and regulations" came about, with nobody 100% certain of the correct solution common sense between two sporting teams prevailed. A game neither side deserved to lose it just happened to be Herne Bay’s night.
The team and myself would like to thank Peter Gibson, Alan Jordon, Alf Collar, Maureen & Colin Tobutt, Steve Brown and Les (I'm only stopping for an hour and left at 10pm) Mason for their support. Bob Day & Brian Gisby for their team support and waiter service afterwards (you will never be out of a job gents). Finally, a very special thank you to Angie & Mo for an excellent hot meal. We probably don't show it enough, but I do promise you all your support is really appreciated.
So, to the next round when we are at home to either Ramsgate or Hythe. I will be offering the following dates Thursday 21st June at 6pm, Saturday 30 June at 10am and Sunday 1 July at 6pm.
