The first HBBC Short Mat Singles Competition took place on Saturday. A very long but enjoyable day was had by all. Many thanks are needed: firstly, to all those that took part to make the day an enjoyable event, special thanks go to Glenis McNeely, Chris Stuart and Vicky Lewis who stood in at the last minute to replace people who withdrew for various reasons. Secondly, to all members who kindly came to cheer on the competitors, your support added greatly to the atmosphere of the occasion and was appreciated by all, so thank you.

The competition was a four wood, singles, played over 10 ends in the usual round robin format. With over 30 games during the day, the competition was hot and some very competitive games took place. Winners of the group stages played the semi-finals: Graham Packman played Jacqui Cooper on the red mat whilst John Offer challenged Russell Cooper in a tightly contested game on the blue mat. Russell took the spot in the final, by a measure for two, on the last end. With Jacqui taking the other position in the final it was a family affair to finish.

Bruce kindly drew the discs to put Jacqui & Russell on the red mat leaving Graham and John to compete for 3rd / 4thplace on the blue mat.

The results:

1st Russell
2nd Jacqui
3rd John
4th Graham

An event like this does not run without a lot of support behind the scenes: the markers, the people who serve tea and cake in the kitchen, the people who donate cakes, Marianne for her help with the lunches, everyone who helped with the bar and to Russell for keeping track of the scores; all your help is very much appreciated, thank you.

As with all events, we try to raise a little for charity. Thank you to everyone who supported the raffle; £100 was raised towards the 2026 Captain’s Charity; ‘The Make a Wish Foundation’.
