Match Reports, Short Mat
For those that are new to the club, the Short Mat Section has entered 4 teams into the East Kent Short Mat League this year. The league comprises 28 teams from 14 clubs, playing 2 wood triples both home and away, over 15 ends. There are 6 league points awarded for each match: 2 points for each winning mat, or 1 point each for a draw, plus 2 points for the highest overall combined score.
Our four teams:
Division 1 Hurricanes
Division 2 Spitfires
Division 3 Lancasters
Division 4 Mosquitos (newly formed)
14.10.26 Eastling Cherries vs Lancasters
Lancasters started their season with an away match against the Cherries. Both our triples played really well with Addy Sanni, Shaun Green & Dave Prior winning 17-10 whilst Pam Head, Dave & Christine Stuart secured a draw 13-13 to take 5 of the 6 match points available.
20.10.26 Lancasters vs Eastling Cherries
In the return home match, Lancasters won one mat convincingly 18-5 but lost on the blue mat 13-15. Fortunately the combined score gave Lancasters the overall points. The 4-2 win took Lancasters to the top of Division 3 with 9 points from their two games. Barham Bears are currently second with 6 points although they have a game in hand.
22.10.26 Spitfires vs Boughton Challengers
In the Spitfires first match of the season they had a storming victory taking all 6 points.
Pat Knight, Marianne and John Offer won 20 - 10 whilst Jane Chubb, Maureen and Colin Tobutt won 17-6. Although tied top of Division 2 with Aylesham Starlings and Barham Berches with 6 points, Spitfires have a game in hand over the other teams.
23.10.26 Swalecliffe Oysters vs Hurricanes
The Hurricanes are defending league champions and in their first match of the season they were hosted by the Swalecliffe Oysters. Swalecliffe's hall is being surveyed by the council as the floor is dropping away and cracks are appearing in the building. This affected the level of the mat nearer the kitchen making one side of the mat virtually unplayable. Despite this, the Hurricanes took 5 points from the match with Dave Knight, Dave McNeely & Russell Cooper winning 13-10 & Jacqui Cooper, Angie & Brian Gisby tying their mat 14-14.
After their first game Hurricanes are placed 3rd in the league with Capel Kiwis and Boughton Acorns above them with 8 points and 6 points respectively.
Our newly formed team, the Mosquitos, are yet to have their first match which will be played away at Minster at the beginning of November.
We wish all the teams the best of luck for the season.
