Match Reports, Short Mat
After a two week break all three teams were eager to return to play.
Tuesday 3/2/26 – Canterbury Choughs vs Lancasters (Away) Pam, Dave and Chris Stuart got off to a fantastic start and led 14-4 after 9 ends. Unfortunately, the last 6 ends all went the Choughs way and the game ended a draw 14-14.
On the second mat Jane Lee, Shaun & Dave Prior (standing in for Janet & Graham) played a very even game. Lancasters had the better start taking 5 of the first 8 ends, leading 9-4 whilst the second half of the game the Choughs fought back. With one end to go Lancasters were leading 12-11 but unfortunately the Choughs pipped us at the post and took 2 points on the last end to take the game 13-12.
Match Points 5-1 to Choughs
Thursday 5/2/26 - Spitfires vs Canterbury Bells (Home) Spitfires met the Canterbury Bells at home on Thursday. On the red mat, after three ends, Maureen Tobutt, Pauline Hougham and Colin Tobutt were all square but by the fourth end and a ‘hot shot’ they stormed into the lead 8 points to 3. They then dropped 4 of the next 6 ends, fortunately by only one point each time. By the 10th end the score stood at 10-6 to the home team. Two strong ends took the Spitfires to a 19-6 lead. The Bells fought back making the final score 20-10 to the Spitfires.
On the red mat Pat Knight, Jane Chubb and Derek Hewett made a strong start leading the Bells after 7 ends by 8 points to 2. The Bells fought back taking the next five ends to take the lead 12 points to 10 with one end to go. With one end to play, Spitfires were holding 2 shots; the Bells’ skip fired but unfortunately knocked his own teams bowl out leaving the Spitfires with four points allowing them to take the game 14-12 and the match 6-0.
Friday 6/2/26 – Swalecliffe Seagulls vs Hurricanes (Away) In the final fixture of the season Hurricanes need to play Swalecliffe Seagulls away and then at home. They currently hold top spot in the division and need to secure maximum points if they are going to prevent Capel Kiwis from taking the title.
On the first mat Dave Knight, Brian Bridges and Russell Cooper had a close fought game. After 8 ends the game was all square: 7 points each. Both teams were determined to win with the Seagulls fighting relegation and Hurricanes looking for the title. The next few ends flowed one way and then the other. After the 14th end the Hurricanes were 13-12 down with everything to play for on the last end. Overall, the Seagulls took 8 of the 15 ends but the Hurricanes determination pulled them through taking a five on the last end to win the game 17-13.
On the second mat, Dave McNeely, Brian Gisby and Eddie Allen controlled the game throughout to take the game 17-5. Match points 0-6 to Hurricanes. Job done. One game to go!
