Match Reports, Short Mat
The Hurricanes played their home match against the first of the two Swalecliffe sides in division one on Monday evening 27/10. Dave Knight, Brian Bridges & Russell Cooper were victorious over the Swalecliffe Oysters 21-6 on the red mat, whilst on the blue mat, it was neck and neck for 10 ends before Jacqui Cooper, Dave McNeely & Brian Gisby let it slip to go down 13-8. Thanks to the decisive victory on the red mat, the combined score meant Hurricanes took 4 points to the Oysters 2. In the division, Hurricanes and Oysters are tied at the top, both with 10 points, however, Hurricanes have only played 2 games to the Oysters 3, so maintain first place for now.
On Tuesday 28/10, Lancasters played away at Boughton against the Challengers. With Chris Stuart recovering from surgery Jane Lee took her place as skip, playing with Pam Head and Dave Stuart. They fought a good battle but unfortunately went down 15-7. The star of the night was Addy Sanni who was only in his second league game. He was consistently on the jack as lead, setting up each end for his team. This sturdy start enabled Shaun Green and Dave Prior to continue the pressure and go on to win 13-9 overall securing 2 points for the Lancasters and allowing them to move up two positions in the table.
Tuesday also saw Spitfires taking part in their second away fixture against the Chislet Cavaliers at Hersden. Cavaliers were 2 points above Spitfires in the league table at the start of the evening so this should have been a close game. This proved the case on one mat with Maureen Tobutt, Jane Chubb and Colin Tobutt tying their game. However, on the second mat the Cavaliers proved the stronger team. By the end of the match Cavaliers took 5 of the 6 points available leaving Spitfires 5th in the table. It's early days, with only 3 games played, so I'm sure Spitfires will do better when they return to their home mats.
On Thursday Hurricanes played their second game of fixture one, against Minster Abbotts away. Unfortunately Hurricanes dropped 4 points but maintained their position at the top of the table.
