Team Managers Bugle

The Preliminary Round of the English National Double Fours Competition drew Herne Bay 'A' at home to a very strong Sandwich side. The game took place last night at Spencer Road on a bright sunny evening after a delayed start. Whilst the rink of Richie Callanan, David Knight, Alf Collar and Brian Dennis kept their four in close contention all the way through (they were leading 8 - 4 after 9 ends) it was a match that our visitors eventually won by a total of 15 shots. Brian's rink eventually ending a very creditable 11 - 14. The rink of Bob Baldwin, Mike Trotter, Bob Day and Brian Gisby needed that little bit of luck that teams need at a vital time and it just didn't happen. An example of this was on the 16th end with the home side holding a 6, Sean McCaughan played a shot that one would expect from a Middleton Cup Skip to cut the deficit to 1. An excellent shot. I thought both of our sides put up a very creditable performance against a strong opposition who in fairness turned out worthy winners. I would like to thank all the supporters who turned up to see a fine game played in the right spirit. My thanks and that of the team go to Joyce, Mo and Angie for the meal plus Sue and Paul behind the bar.
We have a feast of action coming up next week in the English Nationals when on Friday 11 May we have a Double 4's side paying Dane Park and a Top Club (2 wood, singles, pairs, triples & fours) against Whitstable. Both games start at 6pm, all supporters are most welcome and are promised a good nights bowling.
