Mollie Cleggett Trophy
This Kent County Ladies competition was started in 1988 when the President-elect, Mollie Cleggett, died before taking up office. Her husband Wally wanted to commemorate her and with Shirley Lawrence the County Secretary, put forward suggestions for an event to be held in her name. The ‘Mollie Cleggett’ is a double rink competition, one rink played at home and one rink away at the same time on the same day. The scores of the two games are added together with the winning team going forward to the next round. The final is held each year in September. Wally and his second wife Phil, now living in Devon, return to Kent to present the prizes at the County luncheon. The Men’s section have a similar competition called the ‘Cox Cup’.
The Top Club
The National Top Club competition is one of the premier English Women's Bowling Association competitions. It was set up by the EWBA some ten years ago. There are ten players in each team chosen for their expertise in the four disciplines – singles, pairs, triples and rinks.
-
A match consists of the ten players playing the four games at the same time.
-
The winner in each discipline gets 1 point. If drawn ½ point.
-
Should there be a tie, the winners are decided by highest overall score.
Kent County competitions are usually split into four divisions, but in Top Club competition it is split into two - where Divisions 1 and 2 play in one semi-final with Divisions 3 and 4 playing the other. The winners then play in the final. If the distance between is too great, the match must be played on a neutral green half-way between them.
The final is held in September at a venue decided by the EWBA.
